HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
Candle Vaporisers or burners - A good vaporiser will last many years, so choose one which really appeals to you. An efficient vaporiser will have a deep bowl with a reasonable height above the candle (tea light). The water should not boil or evaporate too quickly. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil to warm water in the vaporiser bowl and light the candle below. Never leave a burning candle unattended and do not let the water dry up. Keep your vaporiser clean - a high glaze helps. Do not allow a black carbon from poor quality tea lights to build-up under the dish. I have seen “chimney” fires.
Electric Vaporisers - Some models are used without water, some use water. Although it doesn’t have the romance of the candle, I like the safety of my electric vaporizer designed to be used without water. Simply add 5-10 drops of essential oil to the bowl and plug in. After a time your nose will become used to the aroma and you may think your vaporiser or the essential oils are no longer working. Leave the room for 10-15 minutes to clear your nose and then see if you can smell it again on your return. Just a hint of an aroma is all that is needed.
Aromatic Tissues - Place 3-4 drops of essential oil on a tissue, hold near your nose and inhale. This method can be used in many situations e.g. use decongestant essential oils to clear sinuses, balancing oils in times of stress, nurturing oils to ease grief and so on.
Steam Inhalation - Add 3-6 drops of essential oil to a basin of steaming water drape a towel over your head and the bowl, close your eyes, and inhale the vapours. Childhood memories!
Compress - Add 3-6 drops of essential to a cup of water, soak a cloth in the water, gently squeeze out excess water, and place the cloth over the area to be treated. Effective for muscular or joint aches and pains, period pain, headaches, sinus congestion. Choose whether cold or hot water feels best.
N.B. If using Peppermint essential oil, 3 drops is sufficient.
Bath - An aromatic bath can be therapeutic and is a favourite way to unwind. Essential oils do not mix with water. Some books recommend adding 6 drops of essential oil to a carrier oil but this floats and leaves the bath slippery. An essential oil in water dispersant is available, or you might like to add 6 drops of essential oil to Epsom Salts.
Sprays - To make a room or body spray mix 25 drops essential oil with 25 drops of essential oil dispersant in an empty spray bottle. Make up to 50ml with spring water. Use to spray face, body or room.
Massage - an aromatherapy massage is a classic way of enjoying the benefits of essential oils. A regular massage can help you achieve and maintain good health. For adults use 5-10 drops essential oil in 10ml carrier oil.
Please remember that Less is Best. Using double the recommended quantity will not produce a result in half the time. When a number of drops are recommended e.g. 10 drops, that means 10 drops in total not 10 drops of each essential oil in your blend.
